Family Partnership Cadre - An Invitation

Where you are is where you start, and where you start is a good place …because you are starting.
— Michele Brooks

This is a busy time of year. We are all pulled in so many directions and REALLY looking forward to a well-earned holiday break. Thank you to those who participated in last week’s webinar “Problem Parents: Our Untapped Asset” in spite of the timing. Several of you asked if I was planning to record the session. Sadly, I forgot to push the record button, but (luckily) that provided me a chance to record a shorter version for sharing.

Click on the this link for the recorded webinar. Feel free to share it with colleagues. The more perspectives we can gather, the more we all benefit! And – ultimately – the more youth with disabilities will benefit!

I’ve been so encouraged by your enthusiastic responses – both during the webinar and in your subsequent emails. It’s exciting to think about possibilities of having transition teams from different regions, different states all learning together. How powerful to share what we discover about factors in our current practices that limit partnership possibilities. After all, we can’t change what we can’t see!

Can you imagine our monthly calls when teams will share new insights, like…

  • awareness of their own attitudes and assumptions that have limited their outreach to families.

  • new perspectives on their “problem parents” gained from reaching out and listening with compassion.

  • how their historic procedures prohibit family trust.

  • simple ways they could inspire leadership of team members, families, and youth.

  • new approaches to IEP meeting procedures to build partnerships.

  • add-on strategies to current transition activities (transition fairs, career night, transition assessments) that expand partnerships.

  • surprising results from trying new methods.

  • and many more … it’s unpredictable!

What breakthrough would your transition team like to have?

Here’s our timeline for our learning and action:
