What Matters?
We are all bombarded by so many competing priorities for our time, our attention, our energy. We launch initiatives that are important…. emphasis on literacy, on math skills, on higher order thinking, on character, on social justice, on developing 21st Century skills…. the list goes on and on. But what’s important?
What really matters?
Darren Hardy, publisher of Success Magazine said, “If you have more than three priorities, you don’t have any.” He says further, we should identify our single vital function that rises as our top priority.
So, I’ll ask again, “What matters?” What makes life rewarding for you and your colleagues? What really makes a difference in children’s lives? and their families?
I have come to the conclusion that what matters is focusing on those who matter. Think about it. We all need to matter. We need to know that someone noticed us, noticed what we’ve done and let us know that we mattered. This is especially for those students who struggle with their self-worth.
I challenge you today. Regardless of your role, in every interaction, pause a moment to mindfully pay attention:
First, ask yourself what about this person really matters? a smile that brightens the room? an act of kindness? a question that sparked discussion? a focus on details? a remarkable quality like determination, perseverance or courage?
Second, let that person know that he/ she matters. Be creative in how you convey this message and notice the variety of reactions.
It will only take an instant, but I can tell you that the reward is well worth it – for you as well as those who are lucky enough to be in your path. I promise you that it will matter when you let others know that they matter to you. Enjoy – and let me know how it goes!
